Step 1: Test for a dial tone and confirm the phone line is in good working condition

If the phone line is not in good working condition, faxes will have issues being sent and received. The phone line should have a clear dial tone when tested. If there is static on the line, this will interfere with faxes being sent or received.

Make sure the machine is connected to a working telephone line:

  1. Disconnect the machine's fax line from the wall jack or socket.

IMPORTANT: Multiple line phones do not work properly for testing.

  2. Plug a standard single line telephone into the wall jack or socket and listen for a dial tone. Listen to the dial tone to see what the phone line quality is.

    • If there is static on the line, contact your local telephone company for additional assistance.

    • If no dial tone is heard, then the fault is with the telephone system. Contact your local telephone maintenance service for assistance.

  3. Disconnect the phone from the wall jack and reconnect the phone line being used by the printer to the wall jack.

  4. Disconnect and reconnect the fax line from the Line jack on the back of the printer. Make sure the connection is secure.

  5. Repeat the process for the second fax line, if the two-line option is installed.
