Paper and other stock, such as labels, are not made from a perfectly uniform material. Paper has properties such as "grain", which means that each side of a sheet of paper is slightly different. Paper also absorbs moisture that can cause it to curl.

These variations in texture and flatness can lead to paper jams or slight damage to the copies as they are fed through the printer. Copy quality defects, such as incomplete fusing of Toner to the paper, can also be caused by variations in texture. This applies particularly to heavyweight papers.

Trays 1 and 2

  1. Open and remove the stack of paper or other copy stock from the paper tray.

  2. Fan the stack to make sure the sheets are not sticking together.

  3. Turn the stack around or over. This may help if the paper has developed a slight curl.

NOTE: This applies only if standard copy paper is being used. Preprinted paper, labels, and transparencies cannot be turned over.

  4. Replace the stock in the tray.

  5. Make sure that the stock is against the left edge of the tray and between the edge guides.

    Tray 1 and 2 Guides

  6. Make sure that the stack is not loaded above the indicated MAX fill line.

NOTE: It is important not to overfill the tray, as this may cause misfeeds and damage to the stock. It is better to load to below the fill line.

    Tray 1 and 2 Maximum

  7. Adjust the rear edge guide so that the guide just touches the edge of the stack. Squeeze the release latch on the rear guide to move it.

    Tray 1 Rear Guide

  8. Adjust the side edge guide so that the guide just touches the edge of the stack. Raise the lever on the side guide to move it. Lower the lever after adjusting the guide.

    Tray 1 Edge Guide

NOTE: Make sure that the stack is level at the top, and not forced up into the feed area. The guides must lightly touch the edge of the stack, neither too tight nor too loose.

  9. Close the paper tray securely.

  10. If necessary, follow the instructions on the Touch Screen to confirm, change the size, or change the description of the paper or other stock.

Trays 3 and 4 (High Capacity Feeder)

  1. Open the paper tray to be loaded.

  2. Remove the stack of paper or other copy stock from the tray.

  3. Fan the stack to make sure the sheets are not sticking together.

  4. Turn the stack around or over. This may help if the paper has developed a slight curl.

NOTE: This applies only if standard copy paper is being used. Preprinted paper cannot be turned over.

  5. Replace the stock in the tray.

  6. Make sure that the stack is not loaded above the MAX fill line indicated on the rear edge guide.

  7. Close the paper tray securely.

  8. If necessary, follow the instructions on the Touch Screen to confirm, change the size, or change the description of the paper or other stock.

NOTE:Tray 3 and Tray 4 misfeeds: Because the stack height sensor is not on the lead edge of the paper, but at the rear towards the trail edge, problems can occur if the top of the paper stack is not flat.

If the stack is higher at the rear corner due to curl in the stack or something is under the stack, the lead edge will not be high enough to feed properly and cause misfeeds. Turn the stack over in the tray (when possible), or use fresh paper.

NOTE:Tray 3 and Tray 4 multi-feeds: A possible cause of multi-feeds is the interface between reams. If multi-feeds are occurring approximately every 500 copies, then try discarding the first and last sheets of the ream when a new ream is opened.

Bypass Tray

  1. Remove the stock from the tray.

  2. Fan the stock to make sure it is not sticking together.

NOTE: Labels and transparencies have a tendency to stick together. It is advisable to fan the stack well, or load only the required number of sheets for your job to get the optimal performance.

  3. Turn the stack around or over. This may help if the paper or other copy media has developed a slight curl.

NOTE: This applies only if standard copy paper is being used. Preprinted paper, labels, and transparencies cannot be turned over.

NOTE: When feeding paperbacked transparencies, feed the adhesive edge first (LEF), as shown on the tray instructions.

  4. Replace the stock in the tray.

  5. Make sure that the stock is between the edge guides, and that the stack fits loosely under the height guide.

  6. Adjust the rear edge guide so that the guide just touches the edge of the stack.

  7. If necessary, follow the instructions on the Touch Screen to confirm, change the size, or change the description of the paper or other stock.
