NOTE: The computer that is using the Microsoft Windows OS must have an IP address in order to set up printing using this protocol. If the computer does not have an IP address, a System or Network Administrator will need to provide one. An Administrator may also be required to perform this solution as some users may not have rights to add local printers or local ports.

Before you begin, print a Systems Settings (Configuration) Report and make sure the printer has an IP Address. See the Related Content for additional information.

To create a Standard TCP/IP Port:

  1. From the computer, click on [Start], and then click on [Control Panel]. The Control Panel window will be displayed.

  2. Depending on the View By option, perform one of the following:

    • Click on [View Devices and Printers] under the Hardware and Sound section.

    • If viewing by icons, double-click on [Devices and Printers].

  3. Click on [Add a Printer]. The Add Printer window will be displayed.

  4. Click on [Add a Local Printer].

  5. Click on the [Create a New Port] radio button.

  6. Select [Standard TCP/IP Port] from the Type of port pull-down menu, and then click on [Next].

  7. Select [TCP/IP Device] from the Device type pull-down menu.

  8. Enter the IP address of the printer in the Hostname or IP address field.

  9. If necessary, enter a name for the port in the Port name field. By default the port name will be the IP address entered in the last step.

NOTE: Make sure the check box next to [Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use] is not selected.

  10. Click on [Next].

  11. If the Addition Port Information Required window is displayed, select [Custom], and then click on [Settings].

  12. In the Configure Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor window:

    1. Set the Protocol to LPR.

    2. In the LPR Settings section, enter one of the following for the Queue Name:

      • print - (lowercase) To print a job and have it saved for reprinting.

      • hold - (lowercase) To print the job to the Hold queue.

      • direct - (lowercase) To print the job and not have it saved for reprint.

    3. Make sure check boxes next to [LPR Byte Counting Enabled] and [SNMP Status Enabled] are not selected.

  13. Click on [OK].

  14. Click on [Next].

To add the printer:

NOTE: This solution assumes that the correct print driver for the product and the operating system has been downloaded and extracted to a known location on the computer. If you have not already done so, click on the [Drivers and Downloads] link on this window to download a print driver.

  1. Click on [Have Disk].

  2. Click on [Browse]. The Locate File window will be displayed.

  3. Browse to the location of the print driver, then click once to highlight the [.inf] file, and then select [Open].

  4. Click on [OK] on the Install From Disk window.

  5. Select the printer model from the list, and then click on [Next]. The Printer Name will be displayed and can be edited.

NOTE: If the print driver was previously installed, a "Which version of the driver do you want to use?" message will be displayed. Click on the [Replace the current driver] radio button and then click [Next].

  6. If necessary, enter a new name for the printer in the Printer Name field.

  7. If required, click on the [Set as default printer] check box to make this the default printer.

  8. Click on [Next]. A "You've successfully added 'Printer Name'" message will be displayed.

  9. If necessary, click on the [Print Test Page] button to print a test page.
